Published by DoDo London LTD

Effective date: 11 August 2026 · Last updated: 11 August 2026

This policy explains what personal data the CHESS app collects, why, who receives it, and the choices you have. It is written to meet the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR, and Google’s EU User Consent Policy.

1. Who we are

DoDo London LTD (“DoDo London”, “we”, “us”) is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy.

We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as we are not required to do so under Article 37 of the UK/EU GDPR.

2. Summary

CHESS is an offline chess game. It has no accounts and no sign-in, and it does not have a server of its own. Everything you create in the app stays on your phone. The only third party involved is Google, which supplies the banner advertisement at the bottom of the screen.

WhatWhere it livesWhy
Player name, Elo rating, game history, puzzle progress, app settings Only on your device To run the game’s features
Advertising identifier and ad interaction data Google AdMob To show the banner ad that funds the app

We do not ask for your name, email address, phone number, or password. We operate no servers, we receive no data from the app, and we do not sell your personal data.

3. What data we process

3.1 Data stored only on your device

The following is held in the app’s private storage on your phone. We cannot see it, and it is deleted when you uninstall the app or clear its data:

You can clear this yourself at any time: reset your rating from the settings screen, delete saved games from the game history screen, or uninstall the app to remove everything.

3.2 Advertising

The app shows a single banner advertisement at the bottom of the screen, supplied by Google AdMob. To do this, Google may process your device’s advertising identifier, IP address, device and app information, and your interactions with the ad.

We do not receive any of this data. It is collected and used by Google as an independent controller for its own advertising purposes, in line with the links in section 4.

3.3 What the app does not do

For clarity, CHESS does not:

Chess games, puzzles and all engine calculation run entirely on your device and work with no internet connection at all. Aside from loading the advert, the app does not communicate with the internet.

3.4 Device permissions

PermissionWhy
INTERNETLoading the banner ad. Also used to render the app’s own interface over a local address (127.0.0.1) that never leaves your device.
ACCESS_NETWORK_STATEChecking connectivity before requesting an ad
AD_IDRequired by Google AdMob to serve ads

The Google Mobile Ads SDK also merges several supporting permissions (ACCESS_ADSERVICES_*, WAKE_LOCK, FOREGROUND_SERVICE). These are part of the advertising SDK and are not used by the game itself.

4. Who receives your data

Google’s EU User Consent Policy requires us to identify each party that may collect, receive or use personal data as a result of your use of the app. There is one:

PartyPurposeTheir privacy information
Google Ireland Limited / Google LLC
Google AdMob
Serving and measuring the banner advertisement Privacy Policy · How Google uses data · AdMob ad partners

Where Google acts as an advertising partner, it may also engage third-party ad networks and measurement providers. The current list is maintained by Google at the AdMob link above.

5. Legal bases for processing

ProcessingLegal basis (UK/EU GDPR Art. 6)
Running the game, puzzles, rating and review features on your devicePerformance of a contract — Art. 6(1)(b)
Personalised advertisingConsent — Art. 6(1)(a)
Non-personalised advertisingLegitimate interests — Art. 6(1)(f): funding a free app

6. Advertising choices

You can control how the advertising identifier on your device is used, at any time, from Android settings. The exact wording varies by manufacturer and Android version:

Opting out does not remove advertising from the app; the banner will still appear, but it will not be personalised. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before you withdrew it.

7. Children

CHESS is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. The app contains no user-generated content, no chat, and no way to contact other people.

In the EU, the digital age of consent is between 13 and 16 depending on the country. If you are below that age in your country, please use the app only with the consent of a parent or guardian. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

8. How long we keep data

DataRetention
Player name, rating, saved games, puzzle progress, settingsHeld on your device until you reset it in the app, clear the app’s data, or uninstall the app
Saved gamesOnly the most recent 60 are kept; older games are discarded automatically
Advertising dataRetained by Google under its own retention periods

We hold no copy of any of it, so there is nothing for us to retain or delete on our side.

9. International transfers

We are established in the United Kingdom. Because the app stores its data on your device and we operate no servers, we do not transfer your personal data anywhere.

Google, as our advertising provider, processes data on servers in the European Economic Area and in the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK or EEA, that transfer is protected by an adequacy decision, or by Standard Contractual Clauses together with the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, along with any additional safeguards required.

10. Your rights

Under the UK and EU GDPR you have the right to:

Because CHESS has no accounts and we hold no data about you on any server, we hold nothing to retrieve, correct, or erase. Everything the app creates is on your own device and is under your control — you can reset your rating and delete your saved games inside the app, or uninstall it to remove all of it. For data Google collects through AdMob, please use the links in section 4.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office, or to the supervisory authority in your EU country of residence.

11. Security

Your game data never leaves your device, so it is protected by Android’s own application sandbox: no other app can read the private storage of CHESS. The app’s interface is served from inside the app over a loopback address that is not reachable from outside your phone. Communication with Google’s advertising servers uses encrypted connections.

12. Open-source notice

CHESS includes Stockfish, an open-source chess engine distributed under the GNU General Public License v3. The full licence text ships with the app, and the source is available at github.com/official-stockfish/Stockfish.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top of this page shows when it was last revised. If we make a material change to how we use your personal data, we will seek your consent again where the law requires it.
